A Runner's Chant
Just for fun
Cross-country season is almost over. I wrote this for my 2 cross-country runners (all 3 of my boys run, but one just for fun), a chant to celebrate and commemorate a season well run.
The Runner's Chant
For my cross-country boys (with their approval)Air is still - Muster will - There's the gun! Run run run!
Crowd around - Pounding sound - Earth's a drum - Run run run!
Wind in face - Keep the pace - Bright the sun - Run run run!
Swelling chest - Faster breath - Passing some - Run run run!
All alone - Grass and stone - Footsteps come - Run run run!
One more lap - Close the gap - Race of one - Run run run! Goal in sight - All your might - End begun - Run run run!
In and out - Hear the shout - "Almost done! Run run run!" Finish line! Beat your Time! Race is run - Well done, son!
Below is a video of one of the larger races we attended. My fourteen-year-old said it was a strange experience to be in such a large crowd where everyone is focused and silent until the sudden pop of the starting gun, when the cheers of the crowd erupt. There were so many runners! Watching them run, I couldn't help but think of The Last Battle and “Further up! Further in!”

I run every week with my daughter. We both agree that running isn't fun but having run is deeply satisfying.
I love this, Esther! Especially how you picture the last battle. I've had a cross country poem circling my brain as the season draws to a close. It always makes me want to run with perseverance to see them giving their all.
